‘Counter-transference and the Care of Self’
with Moira Walker

Working with adult survivors of abuse: self care and making sense of counter transference.

This workshop will explore the complexities of counter transference in work with abuse survivors, and the importance of understanding its origins; its impact on the therapeutic relationship and the potential or actual effect on the counsellors self and well being. Time will also be given to considering how counsellors manage this work, and what they need to be able to ‘survive’ this potentially distressing and disturbing work without damage to the self. As well as input from Moira time will be made available for discussion in pairs and small groups.

Dr MOIRA WALKER is a registered psychotherapist and Fellow of the BACP. She has considerable experience as a trainer, supervisor, practitioner and writer and has a particular interest in working with survivors of childhood abuse. She has worked in universities, the voluntary sector and in health and social services settings.

Her books include ‘Surviving Secrets: the experience of abuse for the child, the adult and the helper’, ‘Hidden Selves – an exploration of multiple personality’ and ‘Questions of Abuse’ and she has also co-edited two major series of books on counselling and therapy. She has experience in working with adults, children and adolescents.
